TailWinds

TailWinds is a simple to play, easy to run roleplaying system set in 1938; where the aeroplane is more common than the car, and the world is inhabited by anthropomorphic animals.

Welcome to the TailWinds blog! I'm Kit- writer and designer of our humble little roleplaying game, and I'm going to be updating this site as often as I can. I'll be posting information about our setting, system, and game releases- as well as our future plans. I'm also going to be talking about our beta testing at length, where anyone who is interested in joining our beta group may email me for a test guide, character sheets, and initiative cards when our beta goes live. This site is also around for our playtesters to give feedback, talk about their experience, and give critiques, comments, criticism, and just general interest in what's going on.

Taken from the beginning of our test guide, here's a little overview of what TailWinds is, and what we hope to accomplish with this project.

The Setting

After the end of the Great War, the world saw the golden age of flight. With the production of the Curtiss JN-4, what some later dubbed the “Model-T of aeronautics”, flight became affordable as well as alluring. Stories from the war painted pilots like modern-day knights, heroes doing single combat with their enemies. But there were more than just heroes in the skies. These were the days when we saw the first Outlaws, known as ‘barnstormers’ or ‘freelancers’ at the time- those who took to the sky to find fortune, fame, and most importantly, freedom.

With so many goods being transported over lawless international waters, it wasn’t long at all before the emergence of the Sky Pirates- opportunistic thieves and scavengers, attacking and raiding merchant planes. To combat them, the International Criminal Police Commission created the Aerial Regulatory Committee. Among the ARC’s accomplishments in the 1920s were airspace laws that governed the skies, an international currency known as the SkyDollar to facilitate trade between pilots and ports, and the Agency- an aerial police force without borders that tirelessly protect those that seek refuge in the blue.

The world combines pulp fiction and 1940s era sensibilities with steampunk technology, super-science, supernatural artefacts, and talking animals.

The System

TailWinds is a roleplaying game that rewards players for being involved, and for being creative. The mechanics are a supplement to a setting that allows characters to be simple, but strong in their personalities- and therefore, easy to roleplay.
